Press release; Packaged Natural Coconut Water – Specification and Code of Practice

Press release

In August 2017, the Suriname Standards Bureau (SSB) received a letter from the Eastern Caribbean Trading Agriculture and Development Organization (ECTAD)-Suriname regarding a proposal to adopt two coconut water standards.

Following the adoption, the SSB held a consultation session on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 on the following two draft National Standards, namely:

  1. DNS SSB CRS 03 Packaged Natural Coconut Water – Specification
  2. DNS SSB CRCP 02 Packaged Natural Coconut Water – Code of Practice

The purpose of this consultation session is to provide substantive information about the two draft standards, whereby the stakeholders are given the opportunity to provide feedback/ask questions in case of uncertainty. In addition, the stakeholders are also informed about the next steps of the adoption. The holding of this session is a step that leads to the establishment of National Standards that will be implementable for Suriname.

The two draft National Standards are briefly described below:

  • The DNS SSB CRS 03 Packaged Natural Coconut Water – Specification includes specifications for packaged natural coconut water that is offered for sale and consumption. This standard only applies to coconut water packaged in its natural state without the use of additives.
  • The DNS SSB CRCP 02 Packaged Natural Coconut Water – Code of Practice includes recommendations for the hygienic preparation of packaged natural coconut water, including harvesting, processing, packaging, storage, transportation and distribution.

The stakeholders are still given the opportunity to go through the two draft standards and to provide their feedback until Thursday 23 September 2021 at the latest. Thereafter, all comments received will be considered by the Technical Committee which is in charge of the development of these standards. After processing the comments, the Final Drafts will be sent to the SSB board for approval, after which they will be ready for adoption and publication as National Standards. We hereby ask you to continue to follow the state of affairs regarding these standards on our website and Facebook page.
