National standard “Specifications for Honey” established

“First step towards standardization within the Honey sector is a fact! ”
Based on its mandate laid down in SB 2006 no 30 Article 4 paragraph 1, the Final Draft National Standard “Specifications for Honey” has been developed by the Surinamese Standards Bureau (SSB) and has therefore been adopted as a National Standard.

The SSB, as responsible for standards in Suriname, proudly proclaimed the National Standard “Specifications for Honey” on February 26, 2019.

It is an aim to bring about a certain order in society in general and to streamline it with regional and international guidelines in particular. To achieve this, a Technical Committee was set up by the Surinamese Standards Bureau in 2018 to develop a standard for Honey. Various stakeholders from the sector have worked on this standard, namely:
Ms Elisabeth Fung A Foek (Suribij N.V.), Ms Gladys Lieveld (Ministry of Health; Office of Public Health), Mr. Fabian Esajas (Ambrosius-Bees),
Mr. Hugo Breinburg (Hurocom), Mrs. Margo Tjon A Joe (Polytechnic College Suriname), Mr. Mohamed S. Khodabaks (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries)
Mr. Ir. Reinier Taus Eastern Caribbean Trading Agriculture and Development Organization (ECTAD), Mr. Robby Breinburg (Hurocom), Mr. Tanwir Hassankhan, BSc. (Surinamese Standards Bureau).

The document: ⎯ Caricom Regional Organization for Standards and Quality, CRS 18: 2011 Specification for Honey was used in the development of this standard.
Therefore, users of this standard are encouraged to meet more than the minimum requirements set forth in this document.

For several years, traders and consumers have expressed concerns about the quality of honey on the market. More recently, they have been joined by commercial beekeepers and manufacturers using the raw material. There is also a growing international demand for standards, especially to meet increasingly stringent export requirements. This national standard has been developed to specify and harmonize the quality requirements for honey that should further ensure acceptable product quality and safety for human consumption.

It expresses the hope that this standard will contribute to the further growth and strengthening of the honey sector in Suriname.
