03 October 2024Subject: Technical Regulations for the Poultry Sector in Suriname Established
The Suriname Standards Bureau (SSB) proudly announces the establishment of three new technical regulations that will significantly boost the poultry sector in Suriname. The regulations, which will officially take effect within six months, on March 6, 2025, are designed to enhance food safety and quality within the sector and safeguard the health of consumers.
These regulations were established based on Article 6 of the Standards Act (S.B. 2004 no. 121, as amended by S.B. 2012 no. 42), providing a solid legal framework for further development and professionalization of the sector.
The new technical regulations focus on three key areas within the sector: poultry and poultry parts, consumption eggs, and poultry feed and feed ingredients. The implementation of these guidelines aims not only to achieve a high level of food safety but also to improve product quality and transparency within the sector.
The established technical regulations include:
- "Specification for Poultry and Poultry Parts" (SSB 002:2014)
This regulation contains detailed standards for the safety and quality of poultry and poultry parts. It provides guidelines to protect consumers from health risks and helps producers comply with quality standards. Additionally, it includes specific labeling requirements to ensure transparency and accuracy of product information, as outlined in Chapter 9 of the standard and the "General Requirements for the Labeling of Prepackaged Goods" (SSB 003:2023). - "Requirements for the Quality Classification and Grading of Consumption Eggs" (SSB 004:2015)
This regulation focuses on the quality classification and grading of consumption eggs, with clear standards for labeling and processing of eggs. It helps consumers make informed choices, supported by detailed information on the packaging. - "Specification for Poultry Feed and Feed Ingredients" (SSB 009:2015)
This regulation contains specific guidelines for the quality and safety of poultry feed and feed ingredients. It not only ensures food safety but also contributes to the welfare of poultry and the final quality of poultry products. The standards include nutritional requirements and labeling guidelines, which are essential for a transparent and safe food chain.
The Suriname Standards Bureau encourages all producers and stakeholders in the poultry sector to implement the new regulations in a timely manner. As of March 6, 2025, these guidelines will be formally mandatory, with ample time provided for making the necessary adjustments. These measures contribute to the further development of the sector, the protection of consumers, and compliance with international standards.
